The Winstons is a hi-energy band based out of D.C. The group was formed by Jumpin' Joe Phillips, former music diredtor and lead guitarist for acts such as the Stylistics, the Chi-lites, the Delfonics, Ray, Goodman & Brown and many other well-konwn artists. Soul Treasures asked him some questions.

- When were you born and where is your birthplace?

I was born in Darlington, S.C. in 1951.

-Who were your favorite singers when you were a teenager?
My favorite singer as a teenager was, The Temptations.

- Is there any other musician in  your family?
The only other family member involved in music is an ex-sister in law. She is a solo singer.

- What was your opportunity of becoming a professional musician?
The opportunity came for me to become a professional musician a few years after high school, when I was called by another professional musician, to become a back-up guitarist for some well known recording groups.

- What activities regarding music have you participated in as a professional musician?
As a musician, I have been the lead guitarist and or/music director for such acts as The Stylistics, Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes, The Delfonics, The Manhattans, and others. Before The Winstons, I was a back-up musician for various artist.

- What motivated you to reorganize The Winstons in 1996 and why you and Tyrone were merged?
My motivation to reorganize The Winstons came in 1996, when a concert promoter was interested in The Winstons performing on his show, asked if I could get  that together. I then made attempts to contact Richard Spencer, one of the original members and the writer of "Color him father". Although Richard Spencer is not on the road any longer, I have become the Trademark owner of The Winstons and is still performing "Color him father" all over the country. The newer members recorded a re-make of "Color him father" on the latest CD.

- What is the relationship between you and Al Johnson, the producer of "Gospel Revue"?
AL Johnson is a well respected musician and we have worked together on several occasions. Al Johnson produced a couple of Gospel songs for my lead singer Tyrone Burwell. Tyrone bought the songs to me and I loved it. It then became a part of the Winstons. Although Tyrone Burwell is persuing a solo gospel career, I had to ask him to become a Winston. I loved his strong lead vocals and he has been a Winston every since.

- Would you please tell us about your future plan?
For the future, we will continue to record and perform live as long as we can because this is what we love to do.

Please check out this experienced and very talented director/artist.
Soul Treasures hope that he will reach permanent success in Japan, Europe and all over the world.

Thank you Joe.
