Classically trained vocalist, pianist and songwriter Richard Alexander Davis has been in the music business for thirty years.
The cousin of Reggae star Sugar Minott, Richard had his first taste of success at the tender age of fifteen when he won Melody Maker Battle Of The Bands, and ITV music competitions with his band Mixed Breed. The band was championed by Sir Jimmy Saville and subsequently secured a two year residency at The Mason Royal and Le Cardinal night clubs in Bournemouth UK during the late 1970's. |
During the early 1980's Richard worked with talented American musicians playing the Funk and Soul standards of the time on the club circuit.
In the 1990's Richard was signed to Hysteria Records UK as a solo artist and scored massive hits in the Dance charts with the songs "Don't Stop Believing" and "Party On".
In 1995 The Spice Girls producers Absolute produced the song "Deep Inside" with Richard which also found success in the Dance music charts.

| Interview with Richard Alexander Davis |
|
- Could you briefly tell us about your background? Like, when/where were
you born?
I was born in Bath, South West England in December 1959.
- Who did you grow up listening to?
I grew up listening to a lot of classical music including Mozart, Bach and
Chopin, and also a lot of Rock music like Davis Bowie and T-Rex.
- What is your musical background like? And, have you always wanted to be a singer? I started playing piano at the age of 6 and began singing at 14.
- Who gave you the inspiration - a singer that you know, emulate or really
look up to?
It was my sports teacher that inspired me, he was a very good guitarist.
-When did you start as a professional?
I first made money from music at the age of 15 through singing cover versions in
clubs.
- How did you link up with Hysteria Records ?
Hysteria heard about me through a mutual DJ friend. They approached me and
pretty much signed me on the spot.
- Let's talk about your self-titled 1st album, featuring your versions
of songs by Glenn Jones, Sherrick, Freddie Jackson, and many more.. How
did you get interested in 80's soul/funk classics? and why did you choose
the songs/singers?
This was the music I listened to during my late teens and early 20's, it was the
coolest music being played in the clubs at the time, and great for dancing. I
picked some of the less well known songs from this era to pay tribute to them
and hopefully awaken peoples interest in the great music from this period.
- Could you tell us a little bit about your latest album "Lovin' You Direct", the concept behind the idea and your impressions?
The new album "Lovin' You Direct" is a journey back to the Old Skool, it's
paying tribute to the styles of that era but also adding some more modern
influences. I suppose I wanted to do a good old fashioned album about the issues
of LOVE!!!
- What the most exciting thig about being a singer? The most exciting thing about singing has to be performing live to an
enthusiastic crowd.
- Have you ever had a memory in your career that you can't forget?
I have many unforgettable memories but most of them are unprintable!!! Either
embarassing for me or for other people!!!
- What really drives you or motivates you to continue to play music?
The thing that keeps me motivated is the drive to keep writing songs, with the hope that one day I will write a worldwide smash hit.
- What is music for you?
Music for me is a way of life. Some people do it as a hobby or pastime but I live and breathe it.
- Would you like to say something to your fans?
I would like to say a big thank you to all the people who have supported me over the years, and particularly the new fans who are buying the new album. It is great to know that this kind of music is still so popular.
