THE CHESTNUT BROTHERS HISTORY |
We were born 1 year and 10 months apart in Columbia, S.C. Ty on Februalry
5, 1948 and Al, December 24, 1949. We had the desire to sing at very early
ages and did our first professional gig at the ages of 14 and 12.
Early influences were Sam Cooke, The Impressions, Temptations, Sam &
Dave, The Righteous Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Marvin Gaye,
and Gladys Knight & The Pips, to name a few.
Our most ineresting experience as entertainers, was probably during our
first trip to the U.K. The fan reaction was overwhelming. It was quite
a thrill to not only be received so warmly, but also, have the audiences
singing both "Whole Lotta You In Me" and "Hey Sweet Lady"
word for word, right along with us. It was a memorable experience, and
one that will always have a special place in our hearts.
For inquiring minds, "Peace Suite" is an EP, released as the
prelude to a full album. One that will not only include our remake of Al
Green's classic "Let's Stay Together," but other originals such
as "Come 2 Me," "Dem Down Home Blooz" and the eagerly
anticipated remix of "Whole Ltta You In Me," dedicated to the
memory of Grover Washington, Jr.
Our immediate and future plans will include extensive travel throughout
the U.S. and abroad, promoting "Peace Suite," which is truly
a labor of love in the truest sense of the words. When my son, Abdul was
only 8 years old, his mom and I took him with us to see our dear friends
(and homeboys) "Maze featuring Frankie Beverly" in concert. Needless
to say, he went nuts (along with everyone else in the house) in response
to their electrifying performance.
On the way home, he mentioned how much he enjoyed the concert and promised
that when he grew up, someday he'd start his own record label to ensure
that his uncle and I would no longer have to "search" for a label
to release our material, because, he'll put our stuff out on "his"
label. That's been a father/son dream he and I have shared since then.
Released on "Abdul 215 Entertainment" (his label) "Peace Suite" is a manifestation of that dream. As his father, words could never express how proud I am to see this blessing finally come to fruition. Though, not really a bonafide hip hop artist, he's featured on the "rap" sections of "Stop The Violence," "One" and " Brotherly Love." Consequently, in addition to heading his label, he also, performs with us on stage now. And his involvement has been instrumental in helping us attract many younger/new school fans, in the process.
